Like planting a tree whose shade you may never personally sit under, the future we hope for often begins with small seeds we sow today. The future starts now.
When people see your children tomorrow, will they bless them because of the good you did today?
Leaving an inheritance for your children's children goes far beyond what is written in a will. True inheritance is revealed in how we live. How do you treat people? Who have you helped along the way? Do your words lift people up, or do they bring them down?
Whether we realize it or not, whatever we are doing now good or bad is becoming the inheritance our children carry.
Jonathan understood this truth. His father, King Saul, did not leave behind a legacy of kindness, but Jonathan chose a different path. He refused to continue the culture of jealousy and wickedness that surrounded him. Instead, he chose loyalty, honor, and compassion.
In I Samuel 20, Jonathan quietly helped David. Many of his acts of kindness were not done publicly. They were not celebrated or announced. They were simply done because his heart was right.
Years later, long after Jonathan had passed away, his son Mephibosheth reaped the fruit of that kindness. In 2 Samuel 9:1, King David asked if there was anyone left in Saul’s family to whom he could show kindness for Jonathan’s sake. That question changed Mephibosheth’s life. A table was prepared for him in the king’s house because of the goodness of a father who had sown kindness years earlier.
Kindness has a long memory.
So as you pray2 Samuel 9:1, remember that the prayer is not only about being remembered for good. It is also about living in such a way that goodness follows after you.
Make sure you are sowing kindness today.
One day, someone may be blessed simply because your name was remembered.
